History
In the days of hand-draw and horse-drawn fire fighting apparatus, the hardiest volunteer firemen were hampered in the their efforts to race to a fire. With Collingdale Fire Co. #1 located on the west side of the borough, at Clifton and Bedford ave., a fire in the east side could be raging out of control before the equipment arrived. Thus, a group of men led by Hugh Carlin, Harvey Faust and Andrew Voss met in the home of one of the members on Rhodes Ave. on the east side to organize Collingdale Fire Co. #2. The Company was chartered on January 31, 1917 with Carlin as the President. Soon after the charter was granted, the Company bought a lot at Rhodes and Mac Dade Blvd with funds solicited from residents and raised through various projects. Building materials were purchased and the first firehouse, a one story frame building, went up quickly. The first piece of fire apparatus was drawn by ten or more men. The Company's first motorized equipment was a King Roadster.
In 1956 The Company placed a Mack Heavy Rescue in Service. This was the first Heavy Rescue in Delaware County and also the first mobile air-bank.
On February 13, 1987 a fire destroyed the second floor hall. The apparatus was saved but the first floor and the dugout received heavy water damage. In September 1988 the fire house was rebuilt and in January 1989 it was dedicated. This building is still in use today as the Home of Station 42.
